“It’s as if Mingus was waiting for Montreux to come to Africa”

A New Chapter in the Montreux Poster Legacy

As a festival that has always celebrated art in its many forms, Montreux has invited some of the world’s most visionary artists – from Keith Haring, Andy Warhol to David Bowie and Damien Hirst – to create its official festival poster each year. Now, this tradition arrives in Africa.

The inaugural Montreux Jazz Festival Franschhoek poster is by celebrated South African artist Sam Nhlengethwa, whose lifelong love of jazz and mastery of collage and colour perfectly capture the spirit of ‘When Montreux Meets Africa’.

This poster represents legendary double bassist Charles Mingus, whom Sam captured in reflection some 15 years ago.

He says: “To create this poster is a privilege, Montreux has always been a dream for musicians – now Africa joins that dream. This poster is my tribute to that connection.”

A limited number of signed collector’s prints will be available in two sizes – only 50 per size, each hand-signed by the artist during the festival.
